On Friday, the Gurugram Metro Rail project's cornerstone was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi . As an important step towards realising the Prime Minister's goal of furnishing the populace with an environmentally sustainable mass rapid urban transport system of international calibre, the project was sanctioned by the Union Cabinet in 2023.
The proposed railway will have a comprehensive length of 28.5 kilometres. It will link Millennium City Centre with Udyog Vihar Phase-5 and intersect at the Moulsari Avenue station near Cyber City, where it will merge with the pre-existing Rapid Metro Rail Gurugram network. Furthermore, a spur will be constructed at Dwarka Motorway. The estimated cost of the Gurugram Metro Rail project is Rs 5,450 crore.
The construction endeavour is scheduled to be concluded in four years subsequent to the sanction date. Harayana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC) will be entrusted with its execution. As a 50:50 Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of the Government of India and the Government of Haryana, the HMRTC will be formed. Due to the absence of a metro line serving Old Gurugram at this time, the
principal purpose of this line is to link the two locations.
Additionally, the Indian Railway station will be linked to the network, which will ultimately extend connectivity to the IGI airport. Moreover, it is anticipated that the undertaking will stimulate comprehensive economic progress in the region.
Currently, Gurugram is serviced by a mere 17 kilometres of metro infrastructure, consisting of a 5.3-kilometer segment of the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro and an 11.7-kilometer Rapid Metro. Since the open-to-commuters of the second section of the Rapid Metro along Golf Course Road (6.8 km) in 2017, there has been no further expansion of the metro service. Even though it is currently operated by the government via DMRC, Rapid Metro was constructed privately. Prior to this, the Yellow Line to Huda City Centre was the final corridor to be constructed in 2010.
